Windows may be using your bandwidth in the background

If your internet feels slow, the router is not always the first place to blame. On Windows, one quiet culprit can be Delivery Optimization, the feature that helps download Windows updates, Microsoft Store apps, and some Microsoft content more efficiently.

How-To Geek recently highlighted the issue in a practical way: Windows can use bandwidth in the background, and the setting is easy to forget. The useful point is not that Delivery Optimization is bad. It is that many people never check how it is configured.

For home users, remote workers, and small offices, that can matter.

What Delivery Optimization does

Delivery Optimization is Microsoft's peer-assisted download system for Windows. Instead of every PC downloading all update content directly from Microsoft every time, Windows can share parts of downloaded content with other PCs.

In the right environment, that is helpful. A school, office, or home with several Windows machines can avoid downloading the same update again and again from the internet. Machines can reuse content from local peers, which may reduce external bandwidth use.

The problem is that the feature can also be configured to share with PCs on the internet, not just the local network. That may be fine for some users, but it is not something everyone wants enabled.

Why this can feel like a network problem

Background update traffic is frustrating because it rarely announces itself clearly.

You may notice video calls getting unstable, downloads slowing down, games lagging, or cloud backups taking longer. The easy assumption is that the Wi-Fi is weak or the ISP is having problems. Sometimes that is true. But if Windows is downloading or uploading update content in the background, the symptom can look exactly like a general network issue.

This is especially relevant on slower connections, shared family networks, capped internet plans, or remote-work setups where one PC can affect everyone else.

The setting worth checking

On a Windows 11 PC, check:

Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization

The key option is whether Windows can download from and upload to other PCs. Microsoft documents two main choices: devices on your local network, or devices on your local network and the internet.

For many home and small-office users, "devices on my local network" is the safer default. It keeps the useful local-sharing idea without volunteering your connection to help PCs outside your network.

If you have only one Windows PC, or you are on a limited connection, turning Delivery Optimization off entirely may also be reasonable.

Advanced options matter too

Delivery Optimization also has bandwidth controls. Windows lets you limit how much bandwidth it can use for downloads and uploads, including monthly upload limits.

That is often better than simply turning the feature off. In an office with multiple Windows machines, local sharing can still be useful. The goal is not to disable every background feature. The goal is to keep it from overwhelming the connection.

For admins, this is also manageable through policy. Microsoft provides Delivery Optimization settings for managed environments, including controls for download mode, peer selection, cache behavior, and bandwidth limits.

What I would use at home or in a small office

For a normal home network, I would usually choose local-network sharing only, then set bandwidth limits if the connection is slow or shared heavily.

For a small office, I would avoid leaving each machine to decide independently. Use Intune, Group Policy, or your endpoint management tool to define the Delivery Optimization mode. That prevents one misconfigured laptop from quietly consuming bandwidth during work hours.

For metered or unreliable connections, be more aggressive. Limit background update bandwidth, set active hours correctly, and make sure large updates are not competing with video calls or remote access work.

Why this matters

Windows update delivery is one of those features that sounds invisible until it affects real work.

If Delivery Optimization is tuned well, it can save bandwidth and make updates more efficient. If it is ignored, it can create confusing network symptoms and waste upload capacity that users did not realize Windows was using.

The practical lesson is simple: when troubleshooting slow internet on a Windows machine, check Windows itself before replacing hardware or blaming the ISP.

The practical takeaway

Open Delivery Optimization settings and confirm three things:

  • Is sharing enabled?
  • Is it limited to the local network?
  • Are download and upload bandwidth limits appropriate?

That five-minute check will not fix every network problem, but it can eliminate a common Windows-side cause of unexplained bandwidth usage.
